On September 9, the subscription news media site Status held their first ever media summit in New York.
Guests ranged from the always outspoken Kara Swisher to Meredith Kopit Levien of the
New York Times, Nicolle Wallace and Rebecca Kutler of MS NOW in separate interviews, former ABC/CBS Local News President of O&O stations Wendy McMahon (who smartly got out before Bari Weiss did her damage to CBS), Brian Williams formerly of NBC News was also fascinating. He said to Oliver Darcy that the era of the early evening national newscast may not survive into the 2030's just like late night comedy appears on its' last legs with the shocking firing of Stephen Colbert and
SNL possibly heading into its' swan songs depending on long Lorne Michaels is still making the key decisions on which skits get put into the show.
But the reason I wanted to post in this thread was when Kaitlan Collins of CNN interviewed Darcy. The ex-CNN reporter was actually being interviewed in front of a ticketed audience along with media executives past and present. People had to pay between $300 to $500 to watch these speakers live.
But after two weeks, Kaitlan's podcast interview finally made it to the Status YouTube channel. Hear about his early vision of this popular media subscription site, and how it evolved to co-hosting his Friday podcast "Power Lines". He also spoke about how the website came about in 2024, and covering the media business in 2026.
Keep in mind, this interview was recorded nine days before The Ultimate Jerk banned CNN, MS Now, and POLITICO from the White House for coverage he didn't like over a series of months (a federal judge did grant a TRO, and now we are waiting to see when their press badges will be handed back after a few reporters last Saturday reported that they either didn't work at the magnetometer and in some cases were confiscated.)
