I read something interesting in a book written by Jimmie Walker (from Good Times). Both Leno and Letterman were close friends of his back in the 1970s, and both wrote jokes for Walker before they themselves went on to become famous standups.

Jimmie talks about how the stand up community is close knit, he could always crash on Jay Leno's couch back when he was a starving standup and he was doing a show in Jay's town. In this same vein, standups help out other standups when they become famous. Look, for example, at how Eddie Murphy helped the career of Chris Rock or how Martin Lawrence gave Tracy Morgan a chance.

Jimmie says that he always had a spot available on Letterman if he wanted to come on and do standup. The same wasn't always true with Leno. Letterman has had a lot of standup comedians on his show and gave them time and a chance to make it, Carson used to do the same thing. I haven't been keeping track, but according to Jimmie, Leno hasn't helped launch standups nearly as much as Letterman and Carson.

I'm not sure if any of that is relevant but you guys started a Leno vs. Letterman conversation, I just wanted to share something I read. By the way, if any of you like celebrity autobiographies, the Jimmie Walker book is pretty good.

And Colbert it is! This should be interesting, I wonder if he'll still be the character

I wonder how many people realize he's playing a character
We don't know much about him as he really is

It would be real odd if he maintained his character on that show....I highly doubt he will.

Should be interesting to see if he's as quick on his feet as Letterman is when doing an interview.

Thats expected but did they really think they would get a conservative host
Sure he is very biased and his show been proven to mislead viewers sometimes (like taking clips out of context) but the guy is very funny. Im sure Kimmel and Fallon are worried about their ratings.

And yet there's a few things about Colbert that probably confound even his most conservative critics...

He is --in real life, mind you -- a Catholic, and serves, or has served, as a Sunday School teacher for his church.

Either Colbert's WAY more complicated of a guy than anyone knows, or
he really does have a split personality.

All that said... He really shouldn't totally kill off the Colbert alter-ego when his current show ends.
Maybe he can use it for weekly report segments on the Late Show, kind of like SNL's Update.
Basically the character could sort of be to him what "Carnac" was to Johnny Carson.
