Yep, you read the title right... The Weather Channel has decided that winter storms should have names, just like hurricanes and tropical storms do. Read on --- http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/wea ... 38080.html http://www.nydailynews.com/news/nationa ... -1.1173224 http://www.weather.com/news/winter-storm-names-20121001 ![]() A lot of mixed reactions to this so far... but there's just one thing-- TWC isn't the National Weather Service. And they don't seem to be concerned that not everyone is going to adopt their new naming system....which makes it useless for the usual NWS and local channel alerts that will go out not mentioning the names at all. So you'll hear TWC say "prepare for Orko tomorrow", while TV and radio in your area (using the NWS updates) will say "major snowfall expected tomorrow". There's clearly going to be people confused, wondering if everybody's talking about the same storm, or the same regions. Would love to know who got paid - and how much--to come up with this. "ROCKY"??? "FREYR"??? "UKKO"??? Pure genius... but then isn't that what we've come to expect from TWC/NBC/Universal? . |

Ukko is a g0d in Finnish mythology. A g0d of the weather. Also of thunder. Freyr is in Norse mythology. He is the g0d of good weather which is ironic...the odd thing is that some of these names have "good" connotations. I don't know what they are thinking. |

Two thoughts on this: 1. Yes, it will lead to some confusion. 2. The National Hurricane Center needs to hire whoever at TWC came up with those names. "Hurricane Gandolf" just sounds epic. "Gandolf inflicted massive devastation on area beaches yesterday..." |

Just another reason for me to hate what used to be The Weather Channel. Thank goodness I gave up watching about 2 years ago. |
