So here we go again. The Washington Capitals are the champions of the Metropolitan Division for the third straight year. The first two of those seasons saw Washington capture the Presidents' Trophy, and both times, their season ended at the hands of the Pittsburgh Penguins, who went on to win the Stanley Cup both years. Last year's defeat was worse than the the year before; though they lasted one more game, they were shut out on home ice in Game Seven. Alex Ovechkin is in his 13th season, and he hasn't even reached the Eastern Conference Final yet. Meanwhile, the Columbus Blue Jackets have made back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time in franchise history; in fact, this postseason features all three 21st Century teams, and all of the last five expansion teams to join the NHL. The Jackets reached the playoffs behind a red hot month of March, but their overall playoff history has not been kind to them. They have never won a playoff series, and they have only won three playoff games: all against the Pittsburgh Penguins. However, I will make this my upset pick: the Jackets will oust the Capitals and continue Washington's playoff woes. Prediction: Jackets in 7 #1 |
