Last season was a dream year for the Washington Capitals: they won the Stanley Cup for the first time in their 44-year history. Many demons were exorcised last season; their inability to get past Round 2 in the Alex Ovechkin era, their constant defeats against Sidney Crosby and the Penguins, and Ovechkin having the dishonor of being the greatest goal scorer in the last 20 years to have never won the Cup. Though their quest to repeat begun with a brand new coach and some new faces, the Caps remained strong. Oveckhin posted yet another 50 goal season, and behind Braden Holtby's stellar goaltending and clutch playing from TJ Oshie and Nicklas Backstrom, the Caps finished in first place in the Metropolitan. Their opponents, the Carolina Hurricanes, also exorcised a demon this year. Since winning the Stanley Cup in 2006, the Hurricanes only made the playoffs once, and after the Oilers (the team they defeated that year) made the playoffs two years ago, Carolina became the owners of the longest playoff drought in the league. This year, the Canes turned it around and it resulted in their first playoff appearance since 2009. This matchup pits former Southeast Division foes against each other, and while the Canes are scrappy and on a roll, I can't see them taking down the defending champs. Prediction: Capitals in six |
