Who here had the Cards and Nats in the NLCS? I certainly didn't, and anyone who says they did is lying! But here we are. The St. Louis Cardinals and the Washington Nationals are playing for the National League pennant. Washington and St. Louis were the last two cities to win the Stanley Cup. Was that an omen? You be the judge. But in any event, the Cardinals continued that St. Louis tradition of being a quiet storm. Nobody had them winning the NL Central; it was thought to be a two team race between the Brewers and Cubs. Yet the Cubs fell off and the Brewers lost Yelich, and that allowed the Cardinals to overtake both teams. After the Nationals lost the best hitter in baseball, well, all seemed lost. Yet somehow, the Nationals went on a tear and locked in one of the Wild Card spots, and later defeated the Brewers in comeback fashion to advance. Both teams played five game Division Series, with the Nats defeating a Dodgers team who won back-to-back pennants and set a franchise record in wins (106), while the Cardinals blew out the Braves in Game 5.

Fun facts: As everyone knows, the Nationals won a postseason series for the first time in their franchise history (est. 1969 as the Montréal Expos). This is the franchise's second NLCS appearance; their only other one came in 1981. Because the NLCS was best-of-five back then (until 1985), this will be the Nationals' first appearance in a best-of-seven series. As for the Cardinals, this is their first NLCS appearance since 2014. It is also their 14th NLCS appearance, which leads the league. Regarding the Nationals, as everyone knows, they are one of two teams to have never won a pennant. That will change this season.

Prediction: Nationals in six

Nationals 2, Cardinals 0

Anibal Sanchez loses no-hitter in the eighth, but his 7 2/3 innings were enough to give the Nationals a road Game One victory.

Nationals head home with a 2-0 lead behind yet another pitching gem--this time from Max Scherzer.

Nationals 8, Cardinals 1

Stephen Strasburg's 12 Ks put Washington one win away from the World Series.
