Under the restart rules if the number 9 seed finishes within 4 games of the number 8 seed, that initiates a 2-game "play in" matchup. If the 9th seed wins BOTH games, it gets the 8th playoff berth in the conference. If the 8th seed wins ONE of the two games, it maintains its 8th seeding in the conference playoffs. In the EASTERN CONFERENCE, it seems unlikely that the number 9 Wizards can rally to finish within 4 games of the number 8 Nets. It could happen, though. In the WESTERN CONFERENCE, things could get interesting. There are FIVE teams currently within 4 games of the number 8 Grizzlies. They are: Spurs, Trailblazers, Pelicans, Kings, and Suns. They will be battling for the number 9 spot and a shot at the playoffs. |

You have to feel for the Phoenix Suns. The only team to go unbeaten in the restart, but still missed the playoffs via tiebreaker. Portland did go an impressive 6-2, but Memphis just didn't care. 2-6 in the seeding games, with the second win being the one that eliminated not only Phoenix, but also the San Antonio Spurs, who missed the playoffs for the first time since the 1996-97 season. Portland and Memphis will face each other in the Western Conference Play-In, a two game series. As the #8 seed, Portland only has to win one of the two games to advance, while Memphis has to win both games. Winner faces the Lakers in the Western Conference Quarterfinals. |

Phoenix was on fire after the restart. Brooklyn had a fine record in the bubble as well. The Blazers/Grizzlies games should be hard-fought ones. Too bad about the Spurs' streak. But, on the positive side, they have a young team and a bright future. |
