Post subject:  Quick Question, if anyone can help.

I do believe I've come to the right place for this question.

I have something recorded onto my DVR (Direct TV). I'd like to get it over to my computer. How do I do this?

Thank you for any help.

I have DirecTV HD DVR (just got it recently). What I am doing is take the line out of the DVR and inputing it into the back of my DVD recorder. I put the DVD recorder on the proper input and burn the show to DVD. :Kool

There is no direct way to get stuff off of the DVR's HD. I have read of some other alternatives such as connecting and EXT HD to the DVR through the eSATA port. I'll search through my links to post more info here later. :Kool

Get a tuner with s-video or composite input or DVD recorder. If it's HD, then you need to use Hauppauge HDPVR. The tuner and HDPVR records right to your hard drive, and you can transfer video files from the DVD with your computer's DVD drive.

I don't know if Directv has this option but I transfer all my programs right from my Tivo DVR's Hard Drive onto my computer. Tivo has a Wireless USB Network Adapter it plugs into the back of my DVR. That wireless device connects to my home Netgear wireless router. Anything I record on my Tivo DVR I just push a transfer button and it downloads onto my laptop over my wireless internet connection. No burning or anything like that. I can go the other way as well, I can transfer vids from my laptop onto my DVR harddrive and watch them on my tv.

You guys should look into it, maybe directv has the same type of device for your units. The one I use is the 2nd device on this link...

It doesn't. :no

The old mpeg-2 tivo's could be hacked to open up the usb port. With an adapter you could hook it up to your home network, then insert scripts to be able to extract the recorded vids. I kept my old tivo for that very reason even though only a handful of channels in HD are still mpeg-2 with directv. I didn't bring up this method because if you screw up, you could turn your tivo unit into and expensive paperweight.

Oh that sucks, yeah I would never try to hack into anything, with my lack of tech skills it would definitely end up an expensive paperweight.
