First thing, unplug it and don't do anything on that drive!

Next try freeware before you buy anything. Here's a link to Test Disk which I've used successfully.

How did you lose all the data? Is the drive still recognized by windows?

i just restarted my computer, when it came up the data was gone.
i have used pc inspector file recovery and it does work,it found each individual file.is there any software the recovers the data the way it was?
the drive is now recognized as a local disk instead of a maxtor drive.when i click on it the computer asks if i want to format the drive.

Do you mean folders and directories? I'm not sure about that.

Something isn't right with that drive you're using. I've heard of raid issues with Maxtor drives. If something screwy happens you can lose all your files. I would move everything over to another hard drive and keep that as a back up.

i bought a seagate to use,but moving the files is painstaking.i have to sift through a bunch of stuff that i dont recognize.

I had a Maxtor external 100GB drive and it screwed up late last year. It may not be the hard drive but has something to do with the power supply in the enclosure. I took the HDD out of the enclosure and put it in a new one I bought and it worked. The original Maxtor enclosure did not have an on-off switch like the Masscool enclosure I bought for that drive.
