Post subject:  Resizing Question Power DVD
I have been using power dvd for all of my caps,i've been saving them at 1024 x 768 and uploading them to fotki at 700 x 700.The problem is,it takes a ton of space on my hard drive.Can i save them at 800 x 600 and upload them at 700 x 700 still and not loose any picture quality?

There's a few variables here. What do you consider a ton of space? For reference, I have 576 caps at 800x600 that take up 36MB of my drive. Are your captures in JPG, BMP, or PNG format? Is there a reason to have your captures in 1024x768? Anything larger than the original video dimensions is unneeded (you can't get more detail than there originally was).

A short answer to your question is: You will not lose any quality between uploading a 1024x768 capture or an 800x600 capture unless the original video source was greater than 800x600.

I saw your caps and they're around 300KB. If you just set the caps to cap the original vid size then it should cut down the filesizes by 1/3.

Sometimes when capping from a dvd they get a little stretched sideways because dvd resolution is 720x480 or similar. If that's the case then set it to resize your pics something around 640x480.

Like Mystichon said you're not going to improve the quality by having it larger then the original vids.

That might beg the question, why do I post all of my pictures at 800x600 when the source is 320x240.

The reason I do it is I capture at 320x240 in BMP format, then resize it to 800x600, then convert it to JPG. What does that get me?

If someone wants to resize the image back down to 320x240, most of the detail will be there to work with.

If I had saved at 320x240 JPG, resizing larger would have JPEG compression dithering (fuzzy edges), whereas resizing a BMP has no effect since it has no compression.

Now if someone wants to take my 800x600 JPG and make it bigger, they might get some dithering, but definately not as much as coming from 320x240.

Just like with pro audio and pro photo, you always work in an uncompressed format until your final release, then you can compress it.

For reference again, my 320x240 BMP is 300k, the 800x600 BMP is 3MB, and the 800x600 JPG is about 70k.

If you want to resize it to 800x600 after you capped it at 320x240 in BMP, why don't you just cap it at 800x600 BMP, then change it over to JPG. Then again, you can just cap it at 800x600 JPG

To do that if you don't know how, on your powerDVD, click on tools. You will see a box that has player, at the bottom you will see advanced. Click that, then you will see a box that has snapshot, click that and you can adjust it there. You may want to mess around with the sizes til you see what works best for you

I use Zoom player. I find its seeking speed to be the quickest and the customizability to be what I need.. It only caps at one size.
