This is kind of hard to explain, so I'll use visual aids :P

Using WinTV to record OTA stuff, I've been getting .mpg files that are pretty much unusable.
They will play correctly in PowerDVD and VLC. WMP will play only audio, and MP Classic won't open them at all.
They crash VideoRedoPlus when trying to import them, and crash Womble when exporting. Also, in Womble, they do not display correctly.

You can see in this crude pic of it in Womble, that I only get the upper left corner of the show, and it's garbled at the bottom:

A better look:

Cap on the left is correct (from PowerDVD), cap on the right was from an attempted avi in VirtualDubMod.

File info I got using the GSpot program on the left, PowerDVD file info on the right:

As, you can see, PowerDVD shows correct resolution of 1920x1080, at 30 fps...GSpot, and every other program, shows the file as 704x480 at 59.94 fps. :Coyote

Anyway, just wondering if anyone has any ideas what would cause this or help remedy the situation. As of now, I can't edit or export any video because of this problem :(

I am by no means an expert. and am not familiar with wintv. It sounds like a corrupt mpeg 2 codec problem although Im just guessing. I uploaded a mpeg2 codec to mediafire that might help but USE AT YOUR OWN RISK

http://www.mediafire.com/?4am0xj1lzzi

Did this just start happining ? If so uninstalling and reinstalling software for video capture hardware might work

Virus can do it too

Make sure nothing else is running in background . ( restart computer) before running your vid cap

I dont mean to insult your intelligence or computer knowledge by my suggestions but remember:

"TWO HEADS ARE BETTER THAN ONE EVEN THOUGHT ONE IS CABBAGE"

The cabbage would be mine of course lol

good luck and keep us posted

I get those problems everyday that's become normal for me
But Between NanoPEG and Mpgjoin i can make all my videos Editable so they play with all players :D

So Run the Video in Nanopeg that came with Wintv and then Videoredo will love it :)

I've had recordings that got messed up and have different resolutions on the same vid. Nothing will play them and no editors work. It's usually the beginning of the vid that's the problem so if you can cut that out somehow the rest should work.

There's an HJSplit trick with mpegs that's worked for me. A little hard to explain, but if you get it then it's easy to do. Essentially you are splitting the file up with HJSplit then renaming the parts to get them to join the way you want. The way you want here is to cut out the problem area....usually in the beginning like I said. So, here's what I do.

Split the vid up to 10 parts.

Split the first part up .001 to as many small parts as you can...10MB or less each You will have .mpg.001.001, .mpg.001.002, etc.

Remove the first part, and rename the other parts starting from changing .mpg.001.002 to .mpg.001.001.

Rejoin the parts to get a new part .mpg.001.

Rejoin the original 10 parts with the new .001 and see if it works. I usually do it a few times until I get the problem area out, and not miss any of the beginning of the vid.

It's really not as complicated as it might sound, and I've used it many vids. The last one I did was the Natalie Portman 1080i interview, and it worked out perfect. :D

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! :bow

It was something that I've just noticed happening within the last week. I did run a virus scan just to be sure, and it didn't come up with anything.

I'm sure it's just WinTV's crap software, and it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to uninstall/reinstall. On my computer, I didn't find the NanoPeg program that Cobra referred to coming with WinTV, but I'm guessing it's downloadable. I'll check that out later.

Donkeed, I tried the HJ-Split Method, and it worked like a charm! The only snag was after rejoining, it was still screwy in Womble. I just ran it through Redo, and it worked fine then. :P

I can't believe Cobra didn't bring up the "hammer method" :o :jetserl

Many thanks again, gentlemen! :Kool :Kool

The nanopeg editor comes with your wintv software you downloaded from Happyage website because i have the exact one you have :?

The nanopeg is the slowest thing but it fixes unplayable videos so you can edit them with nanopeg or videoredo :)
If idon't run all the OTA videos first with NANO i can't edit them with videoredo
So that means lots of freakin wasted time just to edit a show :Boxing

I was looking in the WinTV folders, not the "Happyage" one  :Doh

I'll give it a try later and see what I think :Kool
