How do you convert HDTV(.tp, .ts) to AVI?

I've asked this question here a while ago and I think it was Donkeed who suggested I try Media Coder. This did the job great for a while and I was able to play the HDTV clips on my PC at a lower resolution in AVI format. Previously they were sticking and pulling in lines because my machine is too slow to play them.
However, over the last few weeks, Media Coder has been unable to convert any of the .tp or .ts files into playable AVI's. They just lock up completely in all players. Have the new files changed subtley? I have noticed the AVI alternatives have disappeared from postings.
Hopefully, someone can shed some light on this one? I've tried the updated Media Coder to no avail.

For the TP i would convert to mpeg with videoredo or other
and then use Virtualdub to make the AVI

Mediacoder works with transport stream mpeg-2 .tp/.ts files. If you need to convert to program stream .mpg there is also HDTV2MPEG for free. Check the software resources links for that and other ideas.
