I was planning on buying one of those fancy HDMI capture boards to grab HD video off of my DirecTV DVR. The question I have is am I wasting my time because the DVR has the HDMI block hard coded into it?

HDMI usually means HDCP.

If you just want caps check out Directv2PC. It's been discussed here on this thread.
