Is your DVR firmware/software been pushed yet? I'm not 100% sure of the version, but that could be an issue.

I'm able to connect and select videos, but the application freezes when I go to play the video (right after the FFDshow selection pops up). Then I lose network connectivity.

I'll check dbstalk to see if there is anything on that issue.

I'm guessing it to be video card (weak) or memory (2g).

I would think nothing since it doesn't actually store the shows on your computer. I'm guessing it's just a resource hog since it's playing back full HD.

I still haven't tried this since I really have no use for it. I watch all my my stuff on the batcave TV.

I am getting Direct TV with HD and want to do some capping and videos for this board. I would like to know how you can transfer the HD video from the Hauppage HD DVR to your computer? Do you need Component Video inputs on your computer or can the HD video transfer via the USB port? I don't have Component Video inputs on my computer and I don't want to waste $250+ on the Hauppage HD DVR if I cannot transfer the video to my PC.

Thanks in advance for the help!!!

Its USB2 from the PVR to the PC.

Component from the DirecTV receiver to the PVR.

Well the good news is I am getting Direct TV installed today with an HD DVR. I already ordered my Hauppage HD PVR so I can transfer to my PC. I should be up and running next week so be on the lookout for my caps and vids like I have done in the past but now in HD...YIPPEE!!! I really hope the transfer of the HD Video from my Hauppage HD PVR to my PC via USB 2.0 will be the raw video file. I hope I don't need to recapture on my PC. One more random point...Gretchen is looking HOT today even though I wished she would have dressed up for Halloween. She is SEXY!!!

No, it won't be the raw vid from the DVR. The PVR is like a capture card with component inputs. It encodes in h.264 codec in a transport stream container at a maximum bitrate of 13.5Mbs. Think of it as recording like a VHS or DVD player at HD resolution. All that information is right there on the Hauppauge website.

Now, some of the stuff that isn't on there. The only software that plays it back correctly is the Arcsoft player it comes with. The h.264 files don't work with any editor I've tried. So if you want to share videos, you will need to encode them. This could be time consuming depending on how long the vids are, how fast your computer is, and if you set it at high bitrate output. The Arcsoft player will make stills, but it's also a slow process.

There's a good discussion going at AVS Forum so be sure to check that out.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1015617

In the end I would recommend it because despite the negatives I mentioned, the ability to record at HD resolution from any component source for $250 is well worth it. :Kool

Donkeed,

A couple of questions:

The file you transfer from the PVR to the PC is encoded in the h.264 codec?

If you want to edit the file you have to convert it into another format?

What is the extension of the video file transferred to the PC? I might have a program that can edit it.

Thanks,

SOM:)

First, there is no real transferring. You plug the PVR box to a USB 2.0 port and hook it up to your satellite box or DVR. The Arcsoft recording software has a preview display and works similarly to capture cards with s-video input....except of course you get HD resolution. It records right to your computer's hard drive.

The file is a transport stream (.ts) h.264 file. They play back perfectly with Arcsoft Total Theater which comes with the PVR.

For editing, you need to encode them to something. I've read where people have transport splitters, but with the 1080i vids nothing works. The 720p convert easily to AVI with media coder, and if you use a high bitrate you get a near copy of the original vid. For 1080i, I've found nothing that will convert it to AVI. Sceptrex42 showed me a way to make AVI's with the files, but it's a multi step process. I could pass that info on too if you really want AVI's. The Arcsoft software did come with a converter that makes .mp4 and .wmv. I've found the best way is to encode them to a very high bitrate 1080i, then to either edit them with Nero or export the whole thing as mpeg-2 then use a lossless mpeg editor. For the types of vids we do it's not so bad, but if you want to do it for a long movie or something, it will take a long, long time.

I'm waiting patiently for some good software comes out that works with the h.264 files. Until then, it's lot's of painful encoding to get them to final types of vids that I like. I still think it's worth it in the end since you can record any channel....any HD source for that a matter...with a component input regardless of encryption. :)

Donkeed,

Thanks for the info. I thought the PVR had a harddrive and then the file needed to be transferred to my PC. I like that it is directly recorded onto my PC's harddrive. I imagine you are able to record movies you stored on the HD DVR? My goal is to keep the file as close to the original quality as possible when creating a clip. This board is GREAT and I want to help contribute some good HD stuff of FOX amongst other things.

Thanks!!!

Have to add one thing:

I am amazed how AWESOME FOX NEWS is in HD!!! I hope Fox & Friends is in the same Full HD like Fox & Friends weekend! Fox will win the HD game hands down with all their HOT anchors. Where is E.D.? :)

Stay Tuned

Example using DirecTV2PC to get caps:

http://wideworldofwomen.net/WWW/viewtop ... &start=360 - the post from 11/15 by me.

RC has a couple people doing caps this way. I was late to the party, still working on a workflow for using it.

Its kind of clunky and tempermental, but it mostly works :)

I am getting a DirecTV HD DVR installed the day before Thanksgiving and I have a question for those who are using the program. What kind of networks are you using? Wired or wireless? My HD DVR will be in another room separate from the computer.

I'm wired.

You can do wireless, but it will be slower.

dbstalks forum has much more info :)

The only way I can do wired is through the powerline connection. I hadn't settled on a router yet but I have seen some wireless routers that go both ways (wired/wireless). I am looking at a G wireless that I could use with my other computer which runs WindowsME (anything above standard G only works with XP and above). DirecTV does suggest if you go wireless use Wireless N. As for the Hauppauge PVR box, you can get it about $20-25 cheaper if you go through Newegg or Wal-Mart.
