HSN reports $2.9 billion fourth-quarter loss

The down economy hit HSN full force in the fourth quarter. The St. Petersburg e-commerce company reported an 11 percent drop in sales and a $2.9-billion loss as it wrote down non-cash goodwill the company has been carrying on its books since going public last summer.

HSN shares have been all over the board since the IAC/InterActiveCorp set it off at $10 a share just before the fall stock market meltdown. The company's market capitalization — what the stock market thought the company was worth — before Tuesday's earnings release was a scant $220-million. The goodwill write-down could make it easier for Liberty Media, which owns all of QVC and 30 percent of HSN, to buy the rest. Liberty executives recently said they figured they would buy controlling interest in HSN "eventually." In HSN's breakaway agreement from IAC, Liberty agreed not to bid for controlling interest in HSN until at least May 2010.

HSN's sales performance for the quarter that ended Dec. 31 was dragged down by a 25 percent sales decline at its Cornerstone collection of mail order catalogs. Sales at the HSN TV shopping network were down 4 percent, a bit worse than the rest of the depressed general merchandise retail industry. The company's dot-com business was up 4 percent, which is better than the online retail industry.

If Liberty Media takes over HSN, expect some hosts and others (vendors and models) to "vanish"....

As long as they don't get rid of the babes, I don't care what they do. I just hope someone puts Jeanne Bice out to pasture

Maybe this is why QVC is turning into HSN North.Everything that HSN does QVC is copying it....using a runway for fashion and jewelry shows,having the guests do the majority of the presentations,have nothing on-air except a display for long periods of time,camera angles either on top of the item or be back where you see more of the set then you do them.

If QVC ditches Jeanne Bice i'm flying to QVC studio to protest.Since the studio is in your neck of the woods,i'm sure you'll join me.

As for the post topic,if the economy don't rebound HSN/QVC will ditch the hosts and studio and do business stricly on .com.Better idea,they should auction off the host to the highest bidder.

Other than Jeanne Bice,who would fetch the highest $$$$?

I read somewhere, that QVC and HSN had a plan to merge into one Big network, but the Feds said no (too big of a monopoly on the home-shopping biz)...Too bad, woulda loved to see Colleen Lopez hosting a Breezies show, telling the Q producers: "We use live models for our lingerie shows". And seeing how Red-Faced Momma Mary Beth would get hosting a Rhonda Shear show

There will be big time down sizing.It`s a shame because I love most of the female hosts on HSN.QVC hosts are too damn uptight now.

her looks have changed but her personality hasnt shes had the same personality since shes been there

Well, she doesn't put on the legshows like she used to. Chica had some of the all time best legshows. But then again, she got married and then had a kid, so things have changed.

It's not the hosts,it's QVC that's uptight.You'll never see any model on QVC in nothing but her "Breezies,but on HSN you see it almost everyday.The QVC shopper is an older shopper while the HSN shopper is younger and you've to be please your customers not guys that just watch.

Your right,it is QVC for the most part and they will do the samething to the HSN hosts.I know some of you remember when Jacque first came on the scene.I sceen her do a little sexy dance before.She would chat with the guys on her yahoo club.Then QVC shut her down.I can`t see how anyone can say she has not changed.
QVC would have a stroke trying to deal with Rhonda Shear.This is just bad news all a round for a guy like me

I talk to Jacque on Facebook shes also at my Yahoo Group for her she hasnt posted a message there though but she keeps telling she will one day(I also have her as a moderator of the group and yes she does know she is a moderator) its not her that changed its QVC just cause she dont do dances isnt her fault its QVC she did put her hands down her top for the one show 3 weeks ago and took her bra pads out QVC shutting her down wasnt her fault its QVCs blame them for being prudes
