OK, I've been watching the masters for a while. I have a DVR from Brighthouse but there's no instructions I can find on how to download or play a recorded show from my Brighthouse DVR to my PC.

The way I'd PREFER to go is to buy a DVR to do the recording, and then dowload or play to my PC. My TV is really close to my PC ... which is partially why I never get anything done at work  I'd really rather not buy a TV Tuner card for my home PC because I have a KVM switch and I use my monitor for work most of the time.

I searched this forum for the keyword DVR and didn't see much to help me. I'd rather follow in someone else's footsteps instead of reinventing the wheel.

I did a search of DVRs, and this is the most hopeful candidate I found,
http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/replaytv5500/default.asp
but the manual doesn't lead me to believe I can copy files from the DVR to the PC.

Anyone got some advice?

The easiest methods are to either get a tuner card or record a dvd with stand alone dvd recorder. Of course you need a dvd drive on your pc for the latter.

The more complicated method is network your dvr if it's even possible with the brand and model you have. You really should do your homework if you want to go this route because you could fry your dvr. Also you WILL run into problems. So if you don't want to treat it as a hobby and you aren't the problem solving type, then it's more headache than what it's worth.

Whatever way you're interested in, I'm sure people here would be willing to give a little input to help you succeed.

Personally, recording to DVD and then playing the DVD on my PC is the way I do it. My sister was able to help me set things up, since she also takes caps, although it's for something completely different. If you decide to go down this route, I can help you get started :)

I rid myself of archiving to PC (even though I have a TV tuner card in my PC) altogether by purchasing a DVR with a built-in DVD recorder.

Best electronics purchase I have made in a while.

DVD recorder with a harddrive built in. This way you can record to the hard drive in dvd quality, then edit out the stuff you don't and record just the edited footage onto a dvd disk. Put the disk in your computer dvd rom and cap with special software. Both of my computers came with powerdvd loaded in them.

DVD recorders with built in hard drives are a little more expensive but you save a lot $$ in blank dvd's. It's so easy, it must be because i know how to do it. :jetserl

Good luck, hope you will be joining the capping crowd soon. :Kool :Kool

Well, I ordered a reburbished Polaroid DVR with an 80G hard drive. The price was cheap enough that I didn't mind taking the gamble. We'll see how well it works.
Even though ED is "my thing," maybe I can cap some of the local Tampa talent. A taste
