OK, guys, I'm willing to risk sounding like a moron, and please accept my apologies if this has been addressed before, but is there any way to save YouTube vids?

Since I haven't seen anyone post a solution to this - here's my cut

Go to http://www.hyperionics.com/hc/index.asp and download the free trial of HyperCam. You can set it to capture an AVI file of any window you have displayed on your screen (with the small exception of specially coded copyrighted DVDs, etc). With the trial version you end up with a banner that indicates it was captured with an unregistered version, but if the files are just for your viewing that isn't an issue.

Hope that helps
:P

Perhaps I was too abrupt: if you GO to keepvid.com, you'll see that you can type in the URL of a YouTube, etc, etc, video, click "download" and keepvid will do all the machinations it takes to get you a downloadable link for the file [which you then just click on and download the video]. works like a champ.

Many of the videos are ".flv" files, which isn't the most common video format. You can play them with VLC Media Player. There are also lots of apps that'll convert flv files to more convenient formats.

OK - over two years later - I'll revisit this topic.

Firts, I apologize to Jim911 for not grasping his solution right away - since his clarification I have used keepvid regularly.

Now there is an even easier solution. Download Replay Media Catcher free from www.media-catcher.com and install. Once you start the record button it will automatically save any streaming video you view. For YouTube files there is a special arrangement that the file is saved in its entirety. For other videos the trial version of the application saves at the 75% mark (a nuisance, but there is a way around it with a little fiddling - contact me if interested). If you get a clip you weren't interested in you can just delete from the completed clip list or from the target folder.

Happy recording!

I've used DownloadHelper, a Firefox add-on, to save YouTube videos. The newest version also converts videos but you have to download a converter program.

The easiest way i'am found to grab them,is go into your temporary internet files. They'll be the file that comes up as get_video?vid...
If you go into your temporary internet files right after playing the vid, they'll be near the bottom of the page.
Just copy it to your documents. Then play with VLC or Windows Media Classic. You'll need to rename it or save it to a different location if you want to download anymore.
