I used to use AVAST years ago but when I purchased Norton (at the time) it detected things AVAST didnt. And Once Norton fixed the little bugs my computer ran more smoothly than before. Never again would I use a free antivirus program.

I may go with Norton but just wanted other alternatives. But do appreciate any suggestions guys :Kool

I went back to the old tried and true Norton. It never let me down or let anything happen. Tried McAfee a couple months ago when my Norton expired thinking I would get more and better protection. Ha, what a joke, better protection because everything slowed down so bad the hackers gave up. ;) So I exercised my 30 refund policy which BTW, they were very happy to oblige to.

Although I am not a peecee user, one piece of advice I have heard is not to use the big names like Norton or McAfee, since those are the programs that hackers always try to bypass. Virus software from a smaller company might detect the stuff that's designed to bypass the big players.

AVG free addition is probably the best free software out there.
Here is a great website to download it from: www.filehippo.com.
I have 4 PC's and a laptop and haven't got a virus in years.
There is also a ton of other software on this site. Enjoy!

I've used Avast with no problems. You can avoid a lot viruses by simply using Firefox instead of IE. :Kool

hmmm
might need to look into the firefox thing.

I dont have any problems with viruses, just want an alternative due to the resource hog I have now.

Ive heard good things about firefox. Are there any cons to using it say for someone switching from IE? Anything I might need to get used to? Any certain sites that may not work with firefox, things like that.

From what I remember with AVAST (which was a while ago) seemed like the program interface looked kind of like some wierd media player thing. Is that the same program I am thinking of? I also couldnt get the hang of using it. Seems like it was always scanning all the time. And it seems like when I could finally afford norton that it did find some things that AVAST didnt.

I know it is advice that no one wants to hear, but I'll give my usual spiel here: for the most part, *all* of those AV products are basically snake oil. They do very very little in terms of giving you any more security than XP or Vista already has built in [and for that tiny bit of additional security, you often pay a lot, they cause all sorts of system problems [some progs won't install, some won't uninstall, system slowdowns, system crashes, sometimes the whole system won't shut down, etc], and still malware can [and does] just waltz right around them.

Before you mess with any of that stuff, you'd be in much better shape to just use XP [or vista] as it was designed to be run: do all of your work out of a limited/nonprivileged account. Only run in an administrator account when you're *actually*administering* the system [and then, you should be on full alert to be extra careful!]. You can even do fancier things to further [automatically let XP] protect your system, but just "running limited" *already* gets you in much better shape than messing with that AV stuff could ever do.

XP is a wonderful, secure system and letting XP/Vista work *for* you and then seasoning it with a little bit a of a clue and you'll do just fine without all of that AV mumbo jumbo.
