Watch recorded DirecTV HD programs on your PC via network streaming.

The software is by Cyberlink, the sw d/l link is dead right now from the DirecTV page linked above, I've been reading that the directv2pc has been in Cutting Edge specific beta for a few months.... but now that the page is up on DirecTV's site, I'd be hopeful that the service will soon be available, at least as beta, to the general DirecTV customer.

I'm finally getting HD installed next week with DirecTV so this looks really interesting.

Could be better than laying out the $220-$250 for Hauppauges HD PVR if the stream can be played back, specially with something like VLC for capping purposes.

This could be good. I got to find a way to record the stream to get video. For caps I think you could probably pause and get a screen capture at the very least.

BTW, the benefit of the Hauppauge PVR is you can record any component input source at full HD resolution regardless of encryption. For the price of DVD recorder and VCR's were in the past, it's probably the best thing I've bought in a long time. I've archived 100's of movies already, recorded whatever channel, and even some Xbox360.

Hey not too bad. Would like to see how this plays out. Although it is only steaming the signal and you are not able to download to the pc, unless I read it wrong.

But I dont think this is an alternative to the Hauppauge DVR though. As you can only watch the video on the pc, with the Huappauge DVR you can actually record and save a true HD source, regardless of copy protection

Dont get me wrong though, think this would be a great opprotunity for some capping though.

I think they'll probably do the same thing that happens now when you play a Blu-Ray movie thru Cyberlink.

Has anyone tried this? Some of the guys at DBSTalk have it going, but I'm wondering if anyone can cap with it. I got recordings I want to archive before I try anything beta with my HR20.

Exactly, but I'm not testing any CE stuff with my babes and movies still on the hard drive.

The only way i would try that CE stuff is if i had another PC with stuff that it wouldn't matter if i lost it.

That is true, I hadn't quite thunk it thru completely - besides all the encoding would have to be via software on the PC since its just a stream and for HD, the machine itself would have to be one powerhouse. The HD PVR of course wouldn't have that issue.

And the question would be if the stream can be captured outside of Cyberlink's player once it gets started to help in capping from it..... I was thinking it might be part of the DLNA technology and some other 3rd party sw might be available but I haven't seen much of it.

Its odd that DBSTalk's CE members got to do the testing, Satelliteguys CE members weren't included.

If anything, its something for DirecTV users to keep an ear out for....

I may be missing the point here, but I saw somewhere that since all this HDTV is comming our way, stations can now block any recordings. I saw where the sci-fi channel is going to block shows so that you can watch them live or on whatever comes with your provider.

And what I mean by that is, I have DirecTV with thier DVR. And in the future if not now, the only way you can get DirecTV is to use thier boxes. Tivo will not work or other DVRs. It all comes to to the $$$$$$$$

And it does come down to copyrights from what I read. You may be able to get a HD recorder and run the DVR to you recorder and put it on a DVD then play it on your PC.

As of now, I think most people (me too) really will have to wait til stations have to go to HDTV.

Right now I have my DVR hooked up to my DVD recorder, but my dvd recorder is not HD so I get the standard format.

I don't think any of the DVD recorders are HD but merely HD upconvert. I haven't seen one Blu-Ray Recorder yet. I think all the BD recorders are put into PCs. I do have an upconvert DVD recorder (780p/1080i).

The Hauppauge PVR records any HD source regardless of encryption since it's an analog (component) input. If they block stations with encryption it will only be on the digital output (HDMI, DVI). The software it comes with allows you to burn blu-ray format discs on regular DVD's that can be played back on a blu-ray player although I haven't tried since I don't own a blu-ray player.

Set top DVD recorders won't record at HD resolution. You could always burn data discs with movies and play them back on the computers DVD drive. Dual monitor setups and networked streaming devices like Media Center Extender are a few solutions to watch content from your computer to an HDTV.

The point of this feature with Directv is that you can watch stuff on your DVR on your computer. It could be good if you have a DVR in one room, and you want to watch in another room.

Or if you have an HD laptop and the significant other insists on watching something that you really really don't want to, but have something recorded you will be able to stream and watch it.

Check the minimum system recommendations by running the Advisor application to see if your PC is compatible with the DIRECTV2PC application, then download the DIRECTV2PC application.

I have a 512mb card, but its only an x1300, so I think it might be a little too lagging to give it a try at the moment.

The interesting thing is the OOMPH that is required. Are they decoding the recording on the PC? I thought streaming indicated that the file had been decoded and therefore the CPU OOMPH should have been a smaller footprint.

Has anyone else had a chance to try this? Sounds like capping from stream, but those caps may have been resized. Would like to know the actual resolution of the stream.

Looks good. I figured there would be a way to snap pics even if it meant just taking screen cap of with ACDSee or other software.

I haven't had time to try it out, but it said it would be streaming at full HD resolution. I'm really interested in grabbing video so I'm hoping there's a way to get the vids recorded onto a computer.

if its streaming to your computer, wouldnt there be some kind of temp files saved somewhere?

Installed it,but it's not able to find a server.Must be my network isn't configured right.This is what i get after installing.

Camtasia or maybe even Windows Media Encoder might be able to grab the stream, but wonder what kind of sock that will put on system resources, specially if the system is just cutting it on the specs.

Personally, I'm more interested in caps right now, figure sooner or later someone will develop a reliable method of recording the stream from it.
