I would like to know what your thoughts are on both resolutions. Some say 720p is actually better quality than 1080i. Does anyone have a preference? Has anyone actually noticed a physical difference in quality on your LCD's? For me I have a Sony LCD and I cannot visibly see a difference.

I've definitely noticed better motion with true 720p (59.94fps). ESPN and ABC isn't the greatest. I think FNC's 720p is beter than both. 1080i is better image quality with the higher resolution. CBS, HDNet, and Discovery are the kings of 1080i.

1080p blu-ray and PS3 quality is unreal.

720p is better for sports/action related stuff. 1080i would be better for your simple stuff. As donk said, 1080p is king. Although unless you are watching stuff on something larger than 42 inches, you wouldnt see a difference between 720p/1080i vs 1080p. Now once you get into bigger screens, especially 60inch and above, you definately want as much 1080p stuff as you can get. Also depends on the strength of your signal. Where donk isnt too keen on ESPN HD I actually get a good signal.

And PS3 games arent released in 1080p....yet. They are 720p and the PS3 is upconverting them. As of right now there is no difference between Xbox 360 and PS3 in terms of gaming. Though I think with age the PS3 will begin to concentrate on making 1080p games.

I was always wondering why 720p was at 59.94 fps and 1080i was 29.97 fps. NTSC is 29.97 fps. But 59.94 is exactly double!

ESPN HD may be my provider getting a bad signal. Directv compresses the 1080i, but they don't with 720p. It's sort of weird having smaller files for 1080i than 720p.

I think it depends more on programming. I think the studio shows are good, but the game coverages can be downright awful. I've seen some games where the picture is macroblocked to hell and back.

I have experienced the same thing as far as certain programming in general. A friend of mine has a plasma tv and I have DLP, but games look much better on my tv than his. Then again, there certain shows on other channels, like UHD for example that may look better on his tv. But not all shows. Thats where I was thinking it was signal strength. I think Ice was experiencing something similar with QVC HD but now he says its cleared up.

720p is progressive scan and 1080i is interlaced. If you have DirecTV OnDemand there are some movies in 1080p.

720p looks better than 1080i for fast moving action (Like sports)
The way interlaced content is recorded means that each field is captured at a slightly different time,so you can get artifacts during high motion scenes.
Progressive scan is without doubt far superior to interlaced content.

In the UK we get 720p, 720i and 1080i
They even upscale 720i to 1080i on some channels lol
UK HD is fu*cking manure imo and is the reason i have yet to go HD.
